§ 74-61. Definitions.

  • The following words, terms and phrases, when used in this article, shall have the meanings ascribed to them in this section, except where the context clearly indicates a different meaning:

    B.O.D. (denoting biochemical oxygen demand) means the quantity of oxygen utilized in the biochemical oxidation of organic matter under standard laboratory procedures in five days at 20 degrees Celsius, expressed in milligrams per liter.

    C.O.D. (denoting chemical oxygen demand) means as referred to by Standard C.O.D. test as set forth in Standard Methods, current edition, expressed in milligrams per liter.

    Garbage means solid wastes from the preparation, cooking and dispensing of food or from the handling, storage and sale of produce.

    Industrial wastes means the liquid wastes from industrial processes as distinct from sanitary sewage.

    mg/l means milligrams per liter.

    pH means the logarithm of the reciprocal of hydrogen ion concentration.

    Sanitary sewer or sewer means a sanitary sewer which carries wastewater sewage and to which stormwaters, surfacewaters and groundwaters are not intentionally admitted.

    Sewage means a combination of the water-carried wastes from dwellings, business buildings, institutions, and industrial establishments. In effect, it is the water supply of a community after it has been fouled by various uses and discharged into a sewer.

    Sewerage works is a comprehensive term which includes facilities for collecting, pumping, treating and disposing of sewage.

    Storm sewer means a sewer which carries stormwaters and surface waters and drainage, but excludes sewage and polluted industrial wastes.

    Suspended solids means solids that either float on the surface of, or are in suspension in, water, sewage or other liquids, and which are largely removable by laboratory filtering.
